Two years on BigCommerce and my debugging method is basically clicking around until something works. It gets the job done, just slowly, and I’m a little embarrassed about it. How do you all handle it?
Here’s what I do these days:
Think about what I changed. Most of the time the problem started right after I edited the theme, added an app or tweaked a setting. So before anything else I try to remember what I touched in the last day or two.
Switch off apps one at a time. App scripts have caused me more headaches than anything. My cart button stopped working once, and it turned out two apps were fighting each other. A review widget was one of them.
Check the browser console. I’m no developer, but I can at least spot the red errors. Helps me figure out if it’s the theme or something else.
Try another browser and my phone. Some bugs only show up on Safari or mobile. I found that out after a checkout bug sat there for days and I had no idea.
Edit a copy of the theme, never the live one. Learned that after breaking my homepage on a Friday night. Never again.
Search the community threads first. Someone has usually run into it already.
Some things still beat me though. Weird checkout errors, product syncing problems, stuff that only breaks for a handful of customers. For those I’ve started looking at BigCommerce development services , because I’d rather not lose a whole week on something that might take an expert an afternoon.
So what’s your process? Got a checklist, or are you winging it like me? Any tools worth trying?
